Paterson Slide Box
This Paterson Slide box came from a charity shop on Fleetwood High Street in Lancashire. It holds a collection of 6 x 6 cm slides from the 1960s. The photographs are of a families leisure activities, including a trip to Keswick and a caravan holiday. I imagine that the people in these photographs lived in Fleetwood, there is a photograph of a parade on the high street and images of the local area. The colours are vibrant and dazzle when the light is shining through them.
Fogged Transparencies
These Kodachrome transparencies have been fogged by light when the photographer was shooting the film. There is a note inside the yellow box which explains how fogging can happen and the steps to be taken to avoid it:
' Fogging may take place while loading, operating or unloading the camera. Loading and unloading should take place in subdued light or in the shade: the camera should not, of course, be opened when the film is only partly exposed.'
I find these unexpected film accidents really exciting, especially the ghostly and surreal look that the fogging can achieve.

Lantern Slides and how to make them
Lantern Slides by J. S. Waring, 1950
This book was a lucky find from my local charity shop. It is full of useful information on how to make lantern slides. There are sections on equipment for slide-making, developers and chemical reduction. It all sounds very technical. If I had more time on my hands I would like to try and make my own one day. I will be showing a few more lantern slides from my collection over the next few days.

The Magic Lantern
These photographic glass plates can be projected onto a wall or screen using a Magic Lantern.
The Magic Lantern was the forerunner of the slide projector, they are beautiful old machines.
You can see one here.

Old Photo Keyring
A small transparency from my old photo keyring, it is viewed by looking at it through the eyepiece and towards the light. The photograph would have been taken using a half frame 35mm camera. I was surprised to find the woman at the edge of the frame when I removed it for scanning.
Photo keyrings were usually sold at amusement parks, fairs and parties and other occasions where people liked to record their memorable moments.

The elegant lady in these photographic slides has an amazing collection of skirts from the 1950s and 1960s. My favorite is the one of her posing in front of the mountain railway in her very pretty scenic print skirt.

Family Holiday, Cleveleys, 1950s
I found this box of Kodachrome transparencies from a stall on Ceshire Street, London, in 2006. The box is labelled 'Cleveleys ETC, Local.' I was immediately drawn to them because of the location of the photographs, Cleveleys is close to Blackpool where I grew up and I have been there many times over the years.
The family in the photographs are beautifully dressed and they look quite regal with the corgi by their side. I love the young girls pretty red dress with deep pockets and white buttons, and the way she has teamed it with a blue jumper is extremely elegant. Although the slides are marked and discoloured in areas the colours are still beautifully vibrant, especially when they are projected.
